There are far too many cats put to death every year in animal shelters across the nation.  This is a direct result of cats being left to reproduce and not having enough homes for their offspring. 

In 2007 the Washington County SPCA had a group of interested volunteers who gathered together and started what is now known as Alley Cat Alliance.  This program provides low cost certificates to help individuals get free roaming or feral cats in their neighborhood spayed/neutered. 

People often delay spay/neuter procedures due to problems with money, time, ignorance of the ramifications.  Some people believe it's better for the cat to mate "just one time."  Most people don't realize:

• Cats can start mating as early as six months of age
• Even indoor only cats find ways to get outdoors when the sexual urge hits them.  They often disappear for good or return home pregnant.
• Left unneutered, a male cat can father hundreds of kittens a year.
• Spaying a female before her first heat cycle protects her from the risks of uterine, ovarian and mammary cancers.
• Spaying/neutering reduces the chances of typical 'cat marking'.
• Neutering reduces a males urge to roam and to fight, therefore lowering the chances of disease transmissions and wounds.
• Neutering eliminates the powerful odor of adult cat urine.
